Campbeltown, which has a population of around 7000 people, is famous for its part in the whisky industry and, at the present time, three distilleries are still in production. The town has also retained its own fishing fleet and has a splendid refurbished harbour with separate mooring and pontoon facilities being available for local and visiting yachtsmen. About 4 miles out of town is the local airport which has twice daily flights to and from Glasgow with an in-flight time of 25 minutes. There are also six coaches per day from Glasgow 137 miles away and which can be reached by car in approximately 3 hours. The town offers a good range of amenities including two large supermarkets, cinema, library, hospital and health centre, 4 banks, a building society, and both primary and secondary schooling. Campbeltown Grammar School has an excellent musical tradition having both award winning school brass band and school pipe bands. For the golfing enthusiast the renowned championship links at Machrihanish are only 6 miles to the west of town as is the recently opened world famous Machrihanish Dunes Golf Course with hotel restaurant and state of the art Spa. Campbeltown itself has a large leisure complex which includes a state of the art gym, 25m swimming pool, steam room and sauna as well as conference facilities. The sailing club is situated only a short distance away with other leisure activities such as wind surfing, pony trekking, hill/forestry walks, loch and sea angling readily available and the spectacular Kintyre Way stretching 100 miles of glorious and scenic walking countryside. Campbeltown and surrounding areas offer several long golden sandy beaches with fantastic walks, swimming, water sports and surfing. The newly operating ferry service from Ardrossan/Arran is also proving to be a very popular and economical way to travel to this beautiful part of Kintyre.
